- Prepare and send proposal containing timeline with milestones
- Create sitemap of website with proposed sections and pages
- Create wireframe of specific pages
- Create content and copy for the site
- Design a logo, favicon and additional graphic materials
- Research client’s industry, its trends, practices, and find best ways to communicate to the professionals and consumers of that industry
- Buy and tweak images to be used on the site
- Define privacy policy and other legal text required for website
- Make sure web copywriting has been proofread and ran through a spelling and grammar checker
- Send designs to client for approval
- Perform any required design changes
Development
- Ensure the domain is in place and set up correctly
- Ensure there is a suitable hosting space for the website
- Install and configure the content management system
- Upload the website source files
- Populate the website with the various content items and implement designs
- Make sure contact info is encoded so it can’t be scraped
- Connect social media accounts and social media feeds when applicable
- Send current iteration to client and request feedback
- Test all linked content and verify that they are correctly linked
- Migrate site to new domain, recheck all links
- Change the nameservers of the domain to the nameservers of the hosting server
- Ensure that all forms are submitting data properly.
- Create and test email accounts
- Implement backup software and schedule regular database backups
- Install site statistics software to produce regular reports on visitor data
- Install spam and virus protection
Optimization
- Check with multiple sources that the load time for site pages is as fast as possible
- Minimize JavaScript and CSS files to decrease used disk space
- Optimize the size of images and replace the existing images with the optimized versions
- Check entire site functionality on multiple browsers and devices
- Send the finished site to client and get feedback
- Perform any required change
SEO
- Check that all pages have unique page titles
- Check that all content conforms to Google’s guidelines for length and keyword density
- Check that all pages have unique, keyword-based meta descriptions
- Verify that pages have enough keywords included without any keyword stuffing
- Ensure that relevant Alt tags have been added to every image
- Create a dynamic XML sitemap and verify it’s been submitted to search engines
